I remember hearing a story many years ago in a Sunday School lesson, about some prisoners in a concentration camp digging a moat around the camp. One day when they were being given their spades, there was one missing. The General of the camp shouted that if the person who had taken the missing spade did not own up straight away then the men would start getting shot one by one. There was silence and as a gun was pointed at the first man in the line, an old man stood forward and said it was him who had stolen the spade. The man was shot dead. Just then, one of the guards came out of the shed with the missing spade. It had just been left behind. The old man had died for his comrades. He had sacrificed his life for them.
What is the greatest gift you have ever been given?
Well I know that for each Bible believing Christian, it was the moment that Jesus Christ was nailed to the cross, hung there being shouted at and jeered by the crowds and then dying, not just for you and me but for everyone who has lived and is yet to live in this world of ours! He died that we might live, and yet there is more, three days later, the stone had been rolled away from the entrance of the tomb, and Jesus was no longer there. He was resurrected. He was alive! And He is alive today, the Author and Perfector, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. Jesus Christ willingly went to the cross to die for our sins. He was the Sacrificial Lamb. He was the greatest gift ever given and that is why we celebrate His death and resurrection this Easter!
