In Matthew 7:24-28 Jesus describes two men who each built a house. He didn’t mention any difference in their skills, all He talked about was where they each chose to build. One man was wise and built his house on the rock, one was foolish and built his on the sand.
It would have been hard to chip into the rock and level it all off. It would have taken a long time to attach the house to the bedrock, but the wise man must have thought it was worth the effort. Because of how it was built the house would stand up to the storms that were to come.
The foolish man however didn’t seem to think that the foundation was important to invest much time in and so he concentrated on the present and getting the house built quickly. Building on the sand would have been much easier, without taking any time on the foundations the house would have been put up very fast. The foolish builder didn’t seem too concerned about the coming storms.
When the storms came which house withstood the torrent?
Jesus said to follow Him we have to be like the wise builder. We will come through the storms of life, because what Jesus says in His Word are rock solid principles about how to live life successfully. The house built on the rock survived the downpour, the house built on the sand was demolished. Jesus said, ‘And great was its fall.’
Yes, it does require hard work to do these things, but it will pay off in the long run. What Jesus says provides a solid foundation for our lives, our families, our friendships and our future.
There is only one sure foundation for living an abundant life and that is Jesus Christ. That foundation includes His life, death, resurrection and instructions for each one of us.
1 Corinthians 3:11 ‘For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.’
