And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord." Luke 2.10-11.
I love these verses, where the shepherds are in the fields looking after their sheep and then. SUDDENLY! Light breaks out over the nights sky, probably so much so that they were shaking in their sandals. There is a reason that the angel says 'Fear not...' and that has to be that the angel is very aware about how frightening this scene must have been. One minute you're talking to your shepherd friends the next minute the pitch black darkness has gone and the brightest of lights has taken over as hosts of angels cover the nights sky.
God's angelic messengers had a job to do, they had something to tell the shepherds, something that was for... all people not just them. They brought the 'good news' that a Saviour had been born, a Saviour who was Christ the Lord, JESUS. And the shepherds hurry off to the stable to worship Him.
Fast forward 2015 years, and the Lord Jesus Christ has new messengers to tell people about the Lord Jesus Christ, you and me.
In Matthew 28:19 it says, 'Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,' in other words go and tell people about Jesus! Today we have the opportunity like the shepherds undoubtedly had, to tell people about who Jesus is and what He means to us as Christians living in Windermere.
This is the Greatest Story Ever Told as far as we are concerned, because that first moment we were told by someone why Jesus was born, why it's such good news, then we had a choice to make. Accept Him as our Lord and Saviour or choose to go an altogether different path.
I praise Him that He is my Lord and Saviour, that He was born in a stable, lived on earth, died on a cross and then rose again and I have an amazing relationship with Him. This is my Jesus, and He can be your family and friends Jesus if they don't know Him. It really is that simple, but first we must tell them, we must be God's messengers.
On the 20th of December we have our Christmas Carol Service at Lakes, it's called 'The Greatest Story Ever Told' I would ask that you invite family, friends and workmates to this event, they could right now be where the shepherds were before the angels appeared, in darkness. But the light is here, we have to tell them about the light. The light is Jesus.
God Bless, Pastor Mike
